Goose Attack!
I had a run in with a very agressive/overly protective mama goose this morning as I was riding in to work. This is the second time she’s approached my as I rode by. This morning she literally flew into the side of my bike. Yikes! I can understand the instinct to be protective of your young, but I went out of my way to be on the opposite side of the bike bath to give her some room.

Bacon sizzle
I purchased and mounted a pair of studded tires on my bike a couple of weeks ago. They’re definitely a little more work to spin, but on those cold morning commutes in the dark when the roads are slick it’s definitely worth the extra effort. The studs on dry pavement do actually sound like sizzling bacon. I’ve been riding quite consistently this month and it’s been great....

Matt's Bike Commute: Snow →
rhodeskc: oumatt: So we’re getting the same snow that everyone else seems to be getting this week and I’ve been diligently riding in it anyways. This morning I flatted out my front tire and didn’t realize it for a while and kept riding. By the time realized it I had ridden a couple of miles. At that point I just… Hi Matt, The tube will probably be damaged at the base of the stem. Even if it...

This morning I flatted out my front tire and didn’t realize it for a while and kept riding. By the time realized it I had ridden a couple of miles. 2010 Mileage / 2010 Wrapup
I don’t do a very good job of where my mileage really comes from in that I take pleasure rides on my commuter and occasionally commute on my road bike. That said the odometer for the year says 2297 for the commuter and 1110 on the road bike. My mileage grand total for 2010 is 3407 miles biked. Not bad for a single year. My goal is just to outdo myself in the coming year. I’ve been...

Bike Commute Percentage
As of last Thursday I am done with work for the year. Likewise, I’m done commuting to work for the year. I managed to ride to work 165 of the last 228 work days. At about 15 miles per ride that puts me at nearly 2500 miles of commuting for the year. I’ll post on my total mileage for the year later in the week. This week I’m pretty much being lazy and/or watching the little one...

After taking a week off from riding in to work I finally got back on the bike for a nice ride in to work this morning. The mercury was up to 21 this morning which really didn’t seem to feel to cold. It’s amazing what wearing the right clothes will do. I’m sure it was a combination of riding in the cold, taking a week off, a less than stellar diet recently, knobby tires with lower...

mostly just lazy
I’ve taken the entire week off from riding my bike to work this week. I’ve mostly done that because I’m nursing a cold, but I have to admit it’s partially just because it’s been friggin’ cold. How’s your week going kids?

Cold Ride
So it was 18 degrees this morning when I left for work. I was peddling into a  headwind and my eyes started watering so they wouldn’t dry out. When I got to work and got inside I rubbed my eyes and got a handful of frozen tears in my hands. Cold face/fingers/toes because of the wind, but overall pretty comfortable. It’s cool seeing other folks on tumbler commuting in the cold. How...

Saturday Night
Warm home, comfy flannel shirt, home-made turkey noodle soup for dinner and decorating for Christmas with my wife and daughter a little later. Nothing like a casual Saturday evening at home with the family to warm the soul. What are you up to tonight?

Still Here
I was kind of off the grid over the holiday as I was visiting family and didn’t have internet access. Last Saturday I ran a 5K with my wife and set a PR for the year of 27:03. It’s not the fastest 5K I’ve ever run, but definitely the fastest in a long time. I’ll have to get back into running a little more to improve my time a little more. Most importantly I beat Lyndsey ;) ...

My first year of bike commuting
The Tuesday before Thanksgiving last year was my first bike commute. I can hardly believe it’s been a whole year already. Last year I was overweight, out of shape and living a sedentary lifestyle. It took me 50 minutes to get to work and I was sore for the first several weeks from my 15 mile round trip commute. In the past year I’ve logged thousands of miles on my bikes, done several...

Deer
I saw three deer on the ride in to work this morning. What a great way to start out the day. I got pretty close to them too! Other than the hippos grazing in the break room what wildlife have you seen this morning?

The Flu
The flu tore through our household like a freight train over the past week. It started last Thursday on our way to see Southeast Engine show. Ella got sick in the car while we were on the way to my parents’ house to drop her off for the evening. She had the flu most of the weekend then Lyndsey and I both caught it one after the other. I missed work Monday and Tuesday. Things seem to have...

Busy week
On Monday I went back to the bike co-op and volunteered for a few hours. They have a checklist that they go through when they prep a bike for sale to make sure everything is in proper working order, safe, and up to date on maintenance. I’m learning a lot about wrenching by volunteering. Tuesday night I went back to the blimp city bike and hike to have the front wheel from the bike I crashed...

First Day Back-Post wrist sprain
My wrist and shoulder have improved quite well to the point where I decided to ride my bike in to work today. I just couldn’t stay off the bike when the weather is this clear. I stopped wearing a wrist brace a few days ago but did decide to wear it for riding at least. And that was probably a good decision as I felt a little achey for about an hour after I got in. It felt great to get back...

Run
My shoulder and wrist are still pretty jacked up from my fall on Monday but I’m starting to get a little more range of motion already. That’s a huge blessing. Since I can’t ride for a while I”m going to start running more. It’s been about 5 or 6 weeks since the last time I ran at all. I did manage to make it a rather slow 3.5 miles today. The weather was actually warm...

Tuesday's Storm
So I had to agreed with my wife and decided to take the day off from bike commuting on Tuesday as there were apparently record breaking wind storms and tornadoes all across the midwest. It turns out that I could have made it safely as the storms passed through while I was in my second floor basement office, but I don’t regret my decision to play it safe. I’m dedicated to bike...

Another Akron Bike Commuting Blog!
A couple of weeks ago I stumbled upon Back on Two Wheels, another the Century Cycles blog. Back on Two Wheels is a blog written by another Akron bike commuter who has a lot of helpful information to share and an interesting perspective on the area as a local historian. Check her out.

Summit Cycling Center
So back in August I stopped in at the Summit Cycling Center for a visit during an open house they were hosting for Akron’s bike week. Since then (actually since some time before then) I came to the decision that I’d like to get involved with the organization. For a while now I’ve been wanting to get active with local bicycle advocacy and I like that they’re a passive type...

I’ve been on hiatus from my blog since about labor day, but lately I’ve been feeling motivated to write on here again. First a quick update on what I’ve been up to lately. After the labor love run on Labor Day I kept running and ran in a relay team in the Akron marathon. I think my leg was 5.7 miles. Since then I’ve been taking it easy. I’m still doing the bike commute thing most days. As of last...

Labor of Love Run
I’ve been running a bit lately and made it to 5 miles for the first time ever last Tuesday night. So I registered for the labor of love 5 mile race here in Akron. I ran 5 miles again on Friday just to make sure I could do it. Both times my time was just over 50 minutes. Going into this race my goals were to not walk and to come in under the 50 minute mark. This morning my five mile time came...

Hiatus Over For Now
I haven’t really been on hiatus, just lazy about posting updates lately. My weight has pretty much leveled out and I’m fine with that. Starting tomorrow I’m going to return to doing weigh in updates, but on Wednesdays as that seems to be the tumbler way. I’ve started running some and will probably run a section of the Akron Marathon Relay at the end of September. Tonight I...

Weigh in Monday
Current weight: 176.6 Last Week’s Weight: 178.2 (2 weeks ago) Starting Weight: 229 Lost This Week: 1.6 (in the past 2 weeks) Total Lost Since 1/25/2010: 52.4 So last week I was on vacation and intentionally skipped the weigh in for the week. Also, my camera broke so no photo this week.  Considering I was on vacation last week I’ll take my small weight loss as a huge success. Now that...
